Paternal behavior at prenatal consultation

The study aimed to comprehend the experience of man as companion at the prenatal consultation. A qualitative research was carried out, whose data were collected through semi-structured interviews, organized by the Collective Subject Discourse method and analyzed from the perspective of Theory of Social Representations. Participants were 15 men attending a prenatal service in the city of São Paulo (SP), Brazil. Five themes were identified: the reasons to accompany the woman; the man in the outpatient setting; the accompanying man in the family context; difficulties in following prenatal consultations; the experience of participation. Although prenatal care is intended for the care of pregnant women, the experience of men in prenatal care - the social object - is a male insertion in the female universe. This participation can benefit both in the experience of the gestational period.
