Impacto dos Grupos De Apoio na sobrecarga de cuidadores familiares em Portugal

Objective: To analyze the relationship between family caregiver burden and social support with the participation in face-to-face and virtual support groups. Method: Pre-experimental study. Inclusion criteria: informal caregivers, adults, residents of the south-central region of Portugal. Independent variable: participation in a face-to-face Support Group (SG), a virtual forum (VF) or no group (CG). Dependent variables: care overload (Caregiver Strain Index) and perceived social support (MOS scale). Descriptive, binary and multivariate analysis with the statistical program SPSS 22. Results: 109 caregivers participated, mainly women, caring for their children/children. 47.7% experienced overexertion for care, being higher in the CG. Social support was good in 64.2% of the participants, being higher in the SG. There was a significant association with gender and social network (being a woman is associated with a greater burden), while a wide social network decreases caregiver overload. Participation in a GA or FV significantly improved network and social support. Conclusion: Support groups, face-to-face or virtual, are valuable resources to strengthen the social network and support, relieving caregiver burden.
